Over the past 3 years, one of our project coordinators, Ken Mason – yes, that’s an actual picture of his garage – has transformed his love of biking into a wonderful ministry, Wheels for Wherry. The idea started when his oldest daughter suggested they donate bikes to families in a housing project Ken’s church supports in Smyrna, TN. Many residents in the community could not afford cars and relied on bikes for transportation. In its first year, with less than 2 months to coordinate, they were able to present 50 bikes to the Wherry Housing community for Christmas.
Since then the mission has grown and now also supports the Hope for Christmas project as well as provides individual donations to families when a need is found. The mission is completely dependent on donations from the community. The donated bikes are carefully refurbished and given to those in need.
“This year we will have given out more than 150 bikes through my church Northview Baptist. We are a little church of about 75 people so it is a big deal”, says Ken.
If you are local to the Atlanta area and have a bike, or even some spare parts that you’d like to donate, you know where to find us.
